“The right book at the right time is a powerful thing.” – Ryan Holliday
Reading has always been more than a hobby for me; it has been a form of self-discovery, of self-leadership.
While I’ve read thousands of books over my life—Goosebumps, Hemingway, history, science, biographies, and more—the books that I want to discuss in this post are philosophical works.
Don’t let that steer you off. I hope you give this a read.
The right philosophy books have helped shape how I think, how I lead, how I handle stress, and how I understand the world around me. They have challenged my assumptions, strengthened my emotional intelligence, and given me language for ideas I may have felt but had not yet fully understood.
For professionals of all walks in life this kind of reflection matters. We operate in environments filled with complexity, ambiguity, competing priorities, and ethical questions. Philosophy, whether studied formally or encountered through great books, gives us tools to think more clearly, examine our biases, communicate with precision, and make better decisions—for ourselves and for the world around us. Reading philosophy helps us slow down enough to ask better questions before rushing toward easy answers.
This blog is about the books that have shaped my mind, my body, and my soul. Some helped me grow as a leader. Some helped me become more resilient. Others deepened my understanding of justice, discipline, purpose, and humanity. Some made me realize I needed to quell my ego! Together, they have influenced not only how I work, but how I try to live.
Some are not “philosophy” in an academic sense, but I firmly hold to the belief that when someone is trying to live a better, happier life, they are practicing and living philosophy, even if they don’t know it.
Here are the philosophical works that have helped and continue to help me be a better version of myself than I was yesterday.
